Josh Abbott Band's Heartfelt Texas Country Won't Stay Anonymous for Long

There's something special about Texas country. Whether you're a Kacey Musgraves stan or more interested in hearing David Allan Coe sing all them songs about Texas, there's no denying that big, brash state that lays claim to Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, and Townes van Zandt is still pumping out plenty of hits picked on the ol' acoustic. Now, thanks to a barmstorming new album, Josh Abbott Band is the latest success story to come boot-scootin' out of the Lone Star State.

Though their live shows are party-centric and most of their songs reach for the high-energy mark, the core of Josh Abbott Band's sound comes straight out of Lubbock, with its banjo, fiddle, and of course, acoustic guitar complemented by singer, guitarist, and founding member Josh Abbot's whispery, honeyed drawl. It's no wonder that they found themselves working with soon-to-be-star Kacey Musgraves a few years back, when she added her own pipes to the band's "Oh Tonight" (off 2012's She's Like Texas EP). Fast-forward a few years, and both of them are out there slaying.

The song is a slow, thoughtful ballad, steeped in tradition and more than a little heartache. Pour yourself a few fingers of bourbon, and settle in.
